Beyond the Bars: A Journey of Self-Discovery
Imagine being incarcerated yet possessing a level of self-awareness and determination that could inspire anyone. Recently, I had the privilege of sitting in on an interview with a potential resident of TPOM and was profoundly moved by her extraordinary story. Despite encountering numerous obstacles, this individual demonstrated a remarkable capacity for taking responsibility, cultivating self-awareness, and remaining proactive. Her journey offers valuable lessons for us all.
Taking Responsibility
With each question asked, her answer showed that she took complete ownership of every action that landed her behind bars. She did not blame anyone or make excuses for her poor choices. Yes, she used “poor choices” and “bad decisions” to describe her behavior. Moreover, she wasn\’t merely uttering the \”right things\” or responding to questions in the \”right way\” to gain acceptance into the program. On the contrary, it was clear that she sat with every choice and felt the impact on her life.
Cultivating Self-Awareness
As I shared my feedback with the interviewer and discussed her readiness to become a resident at TPOM, she noticed that the candidate displayed a high level of self-awareness. We agreed that self-awareness is a step above taking responsibility; the first cousin, if you will. Self-awareness involves understanding our thoughts, feelings, values, beliefs, and actions. This candidate displayed a deep understanding of the things that happened in her life from childhood and the role they played in the decisions she made as an adult. She was also astutely aware of the current happenings in her life that could take her down a depressive path and that is why she signs up for every class and program the prison offers. “Sitting around doing nothing is not good”, she said. She knows an idle mind is the devil’s workshop therefore she must be vigilant. Most importantly, she is fully aware that apart from her relationship with Jesus Christ, no one is coming to save her. Despite what she has faced in the past, she is taking advantage of every opportunity presented to her as she presses onward to what is ahead.
The Power of Personal Accountability: A Call to Action
The interviewee\’s journey serves as a powerful testament to the transformative power of personal accountability, self-awareness, and proactivity. By embracing these qualities, we overcome adversity and unlock our full potential. Let’s follow the lead of our interviewee and challenge ourselves to:
- Take responsibility: Own our actions, choices, and consequences.
- Cultivate self-awareness: Understand our thoughts, feelings, and motivations.
- Remain proactive: Take initiative, take advantage of opportunities, and pursue our goals with determination.
- Move past the past: Learn from our experiences, let go of regrets, and focus on creating a positive future.
The Power of Choice
Where we are in life, whether a physical prison cell or a prison we have created in our minds does not have to determine what we become or who we become. We can wallow in self-pity or like the interviewee, we can choose to rise above our circumstances. Remember, it’s not how we start but how we finish. Keep going!
