Four Core Values of Tennessee Prison Outreach Ministry
At TPOM, what we value most is rooted in our mission and purpose as we serve both adults and juveniles who are incarcerated, as well as those transitioning back into society.
First, we are on a mission of instilling hope. Hebrews 6:19 describes hope as “an anchor for the soul.” Hope is not merely a wish or a dream—it is a confident expectation of what is possible. Ultimately, our eternal hope is in Jesus Christ and him crucified. Through his resurrection, we have the hope of God’s salvation.
Yet, in this life, many of our residents arrive with their hope diminished or even shattered. Repeated disappointments, constant parental criticism, and, for some, experiences of childhood abuse have shaped how they see themselves and their future. They often come in with their heads down, believing their path forward is limited—wondering if a felony on their record will prevent them from ever truly moving forward in life.
At the core of what we do is to instill hope. Our mission is to help individuals rediscover their worth and potential. We work to instill confidence, helping them understand that their past does not define their future. Through guidance, support, and practical tools, we empower them to move forward with purpose, resilience, and a renewed sense of possibility.
Second, we value and seek to foster accountability. As a ministry that takes a trauma-informed approach to all we do, we recognize that life experiences—both positive and negative—have a profound impact on a person’s thoughts, feelings, and actions. Research such as the Adverse Childhood Experience study shows that an individual with a high ACE score is more likely to face challenges such as addiction and involvement with the criminal justice system.
While these traumatic experiences shape us, they do not excuse harmful behavior. At some point, each person must take responsibility for their actions.
Accountability is essential for growth and change. As staff, we hold ourselves to a high standard of integrity and responsibility, and we extend those same expectations to our participants. Simply blaming others for our own continued poor decisions keeps us trapped in cycles of despair. True transformation begins when a person accepts ownership of their choices and commits to a different path forward.
Third, we value and develop productivity. From the very beginning, we see that people were created with purpose. In Genesis, Adam was given the responsibility to tend and work the garden. This reflects a foundational truth: meaningful work is part of a purposeful life.
While there is a place for rest, solitude, and reflection, a life without direction or productivity can be harmful—not only to one’s mental, emotional and physical health, but also to one’s sense of identity and purpose. Idleness often contributes to discouragement and destructive patterns in life.
At TPOM, we emphasize the value and dignity of work. All of our residents are expected to obtain employment as part of their journey forward. We teach that productivity is not just about earning an income—it is about developing discipline, responsibility, and a sense of contribution.
Work helps restore confidence and reinforces the belief that each individual has value and something meaningful to offer. Through productivity, our participants begin to see that their lives have purpose and direction. Clearly, there is dignity in work.
Fourth, we value and actively contribute to the establishment of one’s community. Community is the natural outcome of the transformation we seek. When we live in community, we understand that our actions affect others, and we learn to live in harmony with those around us. Strong communities create safer neighborhoods and healthier environments for everyone.
When individuals develop hope, embrace accountability, and learn to live productive lives, the next step is giving back. A healthy sense of community shifts the focus from self to others. One’s life is no longer centered on how they can use others for personal gain, but on how God can work through them to serve and uplift those around them.
At TPOM, we are supported by hundreds of volunteers who serve faithfully, many of whom give back because someone once invested in them. In the same way, our participants often grow into people who want to serve. They have been helped, and now they want to help others.
This is the full picture of transformation—when someone who once struggled begins contributing to the well-being of others. That is the power of community, and it is a core value of everything we do.
Conclusion
Instilling hope, fostering accountability, developing productivity, and contributing to one’s community are the core values of the Tennessee Prison Outreach Ministry. These values are our guiding star—shaping every decision, every interaction, and every life we touch at TPOM.
Through this work, we are not only helping individuals rebuild their lives, but we are also strengthening families, restoring communities, and creating a ripple effect of positive change. This is the heart of our mission: to transform lives in ways that make our community a better place.
