From Chains to Calling: My Journey Through Reentry and Redemption.

There was a time when my world was measured in counts, concrete, and consequences. Prison has a way of depriving life of its bare needs. You lose more than your freedom; you lose identity, connection, and often hope. Every day you fight quiet battles: staying mentally strong, navigating tension, and grappling with regret. The hardest part is not always the environment itself, but the internal war between who you were and who you are trying to become. For me, that tension was my turning point. I started to see that if anything in my life was going to change, it had to begin within me. That is when I encountered prison ministry, specifically Tennessee Prison Outreach Ministry (TPOM). At first, I was doubtful. Programs come and go in prison, and not all of them leave a lasting impact. But TPOM was different. It did not offer empty motivation; it required accountability, discipline, and honesty. It challenged me to face my past without being defined by it. 

TPOM introduced structure where there had been chaos. It helped me build routines rooted in purpose, not survival. I learned how to think differently, how to respond instead of reacting, and how to take ownership of my decisions. Most importantly, it reminded me that my life still had value. That truth does not always come easy in a place where society has, in many ways, written you off. But transformation inside prison is only part of the journey. Reentry into the real world brings its own set of challenges; ones that can feel just as overwhelming.

When I came home, I quickly realized that freedom comes with pressure. There are expectations to rebuild, provide, and reintegrate, often without a clear path forward. One of the biggest hurdles is employment. A record can close doors before you even get the chance to knock. Applications get ignored. Interviews feel like uphill battles. You are trying to prove your worth in a system that often only sees your past. Beyond work, there is also the challenge of reconnecting – with family, with society, and even with yourself. Things have changed. People have moved on. Technology has advanced. You have to learn how to live again in a world that did not pause while you were gone. This is where TPOM continued to make a difference in my life.

The principles I learned did not stay behind the walls; they came with me. When I faced rejection, I leaned on the resilience TPOM built in me. When things did not go as planned, I did not fall back into old patterns. I stayed grounded. I stayed focused. I kept showing up. TPOM taught me that success is not about avoiding failure; it is about how you respond to it. Over time, doors began to open. Not all at once, and not easily, but steadily. I found opportunities to work, to grow, and to contribute. More importantly, I began to walk in a new identity; one not defined by my past but shaped by my choices moving forward.

Today, my life stands as a testament to redemption. Not a perfect story, but a real one. A story of struggle, growth, and perseverance. I have come to understand that reentry is not just about returning to society; it is about rebuilding your life with intention. TPOM was an integral part of that process. It gave me tools I did not have before. It gave me a mindset that continues to guide me. And it gave me something even more powerful: belief.
Belief that change is possible. Belief that my life could be more than my mistakes. Now I carry that message forward.

There are countless men and women still behind those walls, facing the same struggles I once did. And there are many more coming home, trying to find their footing in a world that isn’t always ready to receive them. My hope is that by sharing my story, others will see that transformation is real; and that programs like TPOM can play a critical role in that journey. Redemption is not given. It is built; day by day, decision by decision. 

And I am still building.
