5 Ways TPOM Supports Mental Health

At Tennessee Prison Outreach Ministry (TPOM), we understand that reentry is not just about finding housing or employment—it’s about healing. For many of the men and women we serve, incarceration has left deep emotional and psychological scars; therefore, mental health is a vital part of the reentry journey. As we observe Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re highlighting how TPOM prioritizes mental wellness for every individual we walk alongside.

Here are five key ways TPOM supports mental wellness after incarceration:

1. Faith-Based Counseling and Support

Spiritual care is at the heart of what we do. Through our Sunday Service gatherings, classes led by David Phipps, our Director of Spiritual Development, and one-on-one mentoring, TPOM provides a safe space for residents to process their experiences, fears, and hopes. We believe healing begins when individuals are seen, heard, and reminded that they are not alone. Faith provides a foundation of hope and identity—both essential to mental well-being.

2. Safe and Stable Transitional Housing

Mental wellness flourishes in stability. TPOM’s transitional housing provides more than just a roof over someone’s head—it offers peace of mind. With structure, accountability, and a supportive community, residents are able to focus on rebuilding their lives without the constant stress of survival. This sense of security is a critical factor in reducing anxiety and supporting emotional healing.

3. Building a Supportive Community

Isolation is one of the most damaging effects of incarceration. TPOM works to rebuild connection through mentorship, group activities, classes, and spiritual gatherings. Residents are surrounded by peers who understand their journey, staff who are invested in their growth, and volunteers who offer encouragement. These relationships form a vital network that combats loneliness and fosters emotional resilience.

4. Restoring Purpose and Self-Worth

Mental wellness thrives when individuals believe their lives have value and meaning. TPOM helps residents rediscover their purpose through job readiness programs, volunteer opportunities, and spiritual development. As residents begin contributing to their community again—often through service—they begin to see themselves not by their past but by their potential.

5. Access to Professional Resources

While TPOM offers strong in-house support through Randy Halstead, our Clinical Director, we also recognize the importance of specialized clinical care. We partner with addiction specialists, rehabilitation centers, and other mental health professionals to provide referrals and support services tailored to each resident’s unique needs. Our goal is to ensure that every individual in our community has access to the resources necessary for lasting mental and emotional health.

As we reflect on Mental Health Awareness Month, we remain committed to walking alongside those we serve—body, mind, and spirit—while pointing them toward the true source of healing, hope, and restoration. We hold close the words of Philippians 4:6–7:

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

  1. Perfect verse for dealing with mental health. We are living in a day and time that provokes anxiousness. It’s so good to know that I can give those feelings to God in exchange for his peace.
