Morgan House

In 2016, TPOM began construction on our first transitional duplex—a home for 16 men leaving prison. As excited as we were about the project, I (Thomas) was apprehensive about how our neighbors might respond. Determined to build trust, I set out with my personal business cards, knocking on doors to inform the community about TPOM’s plans. The house closest to TPOM belonged to Ms. Morgan, a widow in her 80s. When I knocked on her door, I introduced myself and explained the purpose of our new duplex. I assured her that men transitioning from prison would soon be her neighbors.

Once the duplex was complete and the men moved in, they quickly began to assist Ms. Morgan by raking leaves, trimming hedges, cutting her grass and even building her a wheelchair ramp as seen in this picture. Ms. Morgan passed away in late 2018, but not before leaving an extraordinary legacy. She instructed her family to sell her house to TPOM, believing her property should be used to help others. Shortly after her funeral, her daughter called me and said, “Our mother was TPOM’s biggest critic, but before she died, she became your biggest fan.” True to Ms. Morgan’s wishes, the family sold us the property at 50% below market value. Today on that very property, we are preparing to build a new 10,000-square-foot facility for women. We have decided to name it the “Morgan House” in honor of the remarkable widow who once doubted our mission but ultimately embraced and championed it.
